Design Thinking
In this series, we'll discuss techniques that we implement in our Tech Advisory blueprint to accelerate tech growth within your enterprise.
The blueprint was developed and refined through our experience working with numerous companies across various markets. It is designed to be adaptable and involves dynamic components, as business characteristics can vary widely.
What is design thinking?
Design Thinking is a problem-solving method that focuses on understanding the core customers of a given market and generating a comprehensive map capable of defining actions for various scenarios.
This map enables businesses to focus on creating solutions with faster go-to-market processes and understand where their investments will yield better results. It helps adapt the product to meet market expectations and anticipate changes.
Design Thinking origins and targets
Design Thinking was initially conceived with a focus on industrial and human-centered design methodologies around the 1980s. However, it gained significant traction with IT sector adoption in the 2000s, led by companies like SAP and Oracle, among other IT pioneers. These companies started applying it to high-level projects in their innovation labs worldwide, and quickly observed an increase in customer satisfaction.
While Design Thinking became a key tool within the IT sector, it has since spread to other industries due to the nature of IT—it rarely functions in isolation. Its adoption across various sectors has contributed to the broader application of Design Thinking.
Today, Design Thinking continues to be pioneered by IT companies, but many extensive projects across industries incorporate some form of Design Thinking methodology.
How it relates to Tech advisory
The first step in a tech advisory journey is understanding how a product performs in a given market and what it is expected to become. This perspective becomes clear when applied to a Design Thinking plan, providing actionable insights and reducing the influence of creators' subjective "I hope/I wish" expectations.
It offers the tech advisor a clear understanding of market trends, behaviors, and future directions, enabling them to guide the product's evolution effectively.
Knowledge is invaluable, and having a well-defined approach is crucial for achieving the best results—hence, this initial step should never be overlooked.
Can I implement tech advisory and design thinking myself?
Design Thinking is adaptable to almost any scenario, but it comes with a requirement: market experience.
The effectiveness of Design Thinking largely depends on the experience of the person applying it. It requires a professional with either broad experience across various markets or one who is highly specialized in the relevant market. This experience is crucial for raising the right questions and proposing thoughtful challenges for the team involved.
Without adequate experience, a professional might overlook critical market and executional challenges, which could be vital for the product's success. Missing these key points can result in costly missteps and even potential failure.
Tech advisory, on the other hand, involves an experienced advisor —an external expert who guides your company through a faster evolution framework. The level of the advisor directly correlates with the results you can expect, making them a valuable resource for quicker and more effective implementation.
As any other post we will always go through the question:
What if I need instant results?
While Design Thinking can yield quick insights, it is inherently a brainstorming process that requires time. We recommend conducting 6 to 10 meetings to create a comprehensive Design Thinking map.
Tech advisory can help reduce this timeline and improve the quality of results. In some projects, we've managed to achieve high-quality outcomes with just 2 meetings.
However, it's important to note that more time and experience often lead to better results.
